Controls and Automation Engineer

Terumo BCT Ltd Larne manufactures a wide range of sterile solutions classified as Licensed Drug Products, Pharmaceutical ‘Specials’ and Medical Devices.

Working for our life sciences business based in Larne, you will be initially part of a project team of professionals and will have the opportunity to work across a wide range of automation and process handling systems.


The role will entail providing E/C&I expertise for the specification, build monitoring, qualification, validation and maintenance of new utilities, processes and automation supporting the operation of a new manufacturing facility.


You should be adept at undertaking technical work individually or as part of a team and to take responsibility for all E/C&I activity to agreed timescales and within budget, working closely with vendors and internal stakeholders ensuring effective delivery.

 

Duties will include:

  • As an acting E/C&I Lead, implement control systems delivery within projects activity covering verification and qualification to meet regulatory compliance, including IQ and OQ writing, verifying and execution.
  • Execute and document source code reviews.
  • Implementing the control schemes associated with capital projects.
  • Assisting with root cause analysis (RCA) studies and actions.
  • Production support, troubleshoot and implement corrective action across electrical and automation breakdown issues to limit downtime.
  • Implement electrical maintenance requirements for equipment and infrastructure.
  • Assist with Total Preventative Maintenance planning activity to drive improvements.
  • Understand production OEE and drive strategies for continuous process improvement to machine uptime, quality improvements and cycle time reduction.
  • Updating alarm systems and handling.
  • Monitoring the control systems to ensure healthy operation.
  • Implementation of change needed for continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Learn new control arrangements to improve plant efficiencies.

Business Relationships:

  • Establish and maintain healthy relationships within other departments, embracing a good understanding of the regulatory / validation requirements.
  • To demonstrate competence on all regulatory / validation issues in association to equipment and process qualification.
  • Supports the Management Team in executing the qualification strategies for local site operations.

Key Measures:

Time:

  • Work with project teams to ensure that all E/C&I activities inclusive of Qualifications are completed in a timely manner and too the correct site requirements as required by the project.

Cost:

  • Work within agreed project budgets and governance.
  • Work with project teams to forecast project costs unique to the project.

Quality:

  • Ensure that project teams conform to all controls system qualifications requirements.
  • Recognition by peers of expert standing in Control System engineering.
  • Effective transfer of new technology into production ready equipment, fit for final PQ execution.
  • Effective use of tools and techniques, such as FMEA.

 

Applicants must possess:

  • Qualified to a minimum HNC level or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline.
  • Experience of Industrial instrumentation, PID loops and calibration processes.
  • Experience of electrical control systems.
  • Solid Controls, Instrumentation, Servo motion, PID Loop and PLC fault-finding experience.
  • Process control experience using Temperature, Pressure, Conductivity, pH, Level, Vacuum, Volume / Mass Flow and TOC analytics.
  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 standard PLC programming languages. LAD, STL, FBD.
  • Experience with at least one of the following PLC software platforms, Allen Bradley RS Logix, Studio 5000, Siemens Step 7 Simatic manager, TIA portal.
  • SCADA/HMI platform experience with AVEVA/WonderWare (system platform and historian, InTouch), Rockwell FactoryTalk and RSView, Siemens WinCC, TIA Portal.
  • Experience of robotic handling systems. e.g.  6-axis & SCARA
  • Experience of communications protocols including Modbus, DeviceNet, RS232/485, DH+, ProfiBus, industrial Ethernet (CIP, ProfiNet, Enet/IP, general Ethernet layer 2/3 security structure).
  • Experienced in VSD and FSD from various manufactures from configuration to commissioning.

 

In addition, the following would be a distinct advantage:

  • Working in the Medical Device or Pharmaceutical Sector
  • Familiarity with Database Systems or Structured Query Language is an advantage.
  • Experience of automating manual processes
  • Experience with programmable safety systems
  • Familiarity with CE marking processes
  • Familiarity with IEC standards relating to electrical controls e.g. IEC 60204-1, IEC 13849 etc
