Leads accounting, control and financial reporting efforts for Terumo BCT’s Innovation and Development (I&D) function. Terumo BCT is a multi-national life science company engaged in the development, manufacturing, and sale of medical devices focused on blood and cell technologies.  Research and development is at the core of Terumo BCT, and the vast majority of our products were developed internally.  This role will also be engaged in the accounting and compliance activities required for certain research and development projects funded by the U.S. military or other branches of the U.S. federal government.  This position will report directly to the Vice President-Global Controller, but will work under the supervision our Government Accounting Compliance Manager to learn current policies and procedures associated with that aspect of the role.



  • Primary responsibility for accounting activities to support research and development activities in Terumo BCT’s Innovation and Development (I&D) function
  • Prepare journal entries and certain account reconciliations, and coordinate monthly close activities related to R&D costs with the North America Controller.
  • Ensure project costs have correct project code (SAP internal order) assignments, including labor, outside services and other project costs, in order to satisfy requirements of both Terumo BCT management and U.S. government accounting compliance
  • Oversee and administer the use of the Clockwise time reporting system, utilized by engineers and scientists in I&D to track time for project accounting
  • Work in close coordination and support with the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) business partners to the I&D function
  • Prepare invoices in a compliant manner to bill the U.S. military or other federal government agency related to cost-reimbursable federally funded research and development projects
  • Prepare annual calculation of provisional and final indirect cost recovery rates (fringe, overhead and G&A) in compliance with U.S. federal accounting guidelines (FAR/DFAR), and submit such rates the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) for approval
  • Provide support to project managers with financial information for proposals to the federal government. Also work hand in hand with colleagues in contract and enterprise compliance functions
  • Respond to any audit requests by the DCAA
  • Evaluate, or support the technical accounting evaluation, of potential capitalization of development costs in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), specifically IAS 38 Intangible Assets




  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.  A degree with a major in Finance or Business Administration, if combined with requisite accounting experience, may be considered, but a strong knowledge of accounting fundamentals, including the interaction of income statement and balance sheet accounts, as well as accounting systems, is required.


  • 5 years of relevant accounting and reporting experience
  • Experience with U.S. federal government contract accounting compliance.  Previous exposure to transactional billing processes (AP and AR transactions) with the federal government is a plus.
  • Experience with research and development business activities – and the associated accounting practices - is a plus, but not required
  • Experience with life sciences, medical devices or pharmaceuticals is a plus, but not required
  • Experience in a publicly traded or larger organization subject to more sophisticated systems and internal controls is preferred


  • Self-directed individual with strong motivation and willingness to take initiative.  Should work independently but accept constructive supervision.
  • Knowledge of SAP is preferred, but not required. Exposure to an ERP or other established accounting system is required.
  • Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office applications – especially Excel – and skills to use them effectively.
  • Knowledge of U.S. federal government contract accounting compliance, including FAR/DFAR, CAS, FTR
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of associates and management.
  • Interpersonal skills, team oriented and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting standards and practices.  Prefer working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), but a solid US GAAP background is acceptable


An equivalent competency level acquired through a variation of these qualifications may be considered.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

CPA, or progress toward CPA certification, is preferred but not required.



Standard work week, Monday through Friday, typical work schedule is 40 hours per week


Hybrid work environment is supported (combination of work in office location and remote)

Office location is at Terumo BCT headquarters in Lakewood, CO USA

Target Pay Range:  $71,700.00 to $89,600.00  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  7.0%
