Principal Configuration Analyst – SAP Transportation Management (TM)

JOB SUMMARY

This role provides deep functional and configuration leadership for SAP S/4HANA Transportation Management (embedded TM) operating within an SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud (RISE) environment and supporting a globally distributed logistics network, including internally operated facilities and 3PL‑managed warehouses.

The position is responsible for designing, stabilizing, optimizing, and governing end‑to‑end transportation planning, execution, and freight settlement using embedded TM as the system of record, while integrating with externally managed warehouse and execution platforms. The role ensures consistent transportation visibility, cost control, and compliance across inbound, outbound, and intercompany logistics flows in a regulated manufacturing and distribution environment.

The Principal Configuration Analyst serves as a bridge between Supply Chain, Logistics, Finance, Integration, and IT Architecture, ensuring SAP TM solutions align with S/4HANA Private Cloud constraints, third‑party operating models, and long‑term enterprise architecture standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

SAP S/4HANA Embedded TM – Operational Excellence

  • Own and enhance SAP S/4HANA embedded TM configuration as the authoritative system for transportation planning, execution governance, and freight financials.
  • Support and optimize TM capabilities across:
    • Freight unit and freight order lifecycle management
    • Inbound, outbound, and intercompany transportation scenarios
    • Carrier assignment, tendering, and execution visibility
    • Transportation zones, lanes, stages, and routes
  • Ensure TM solutions effectively support hybrid warehouse landscapes, including:
    • SAP‑managed warehouses (EWM or WM)
    • 3PL‑managed warehouses operating external WMS/TMS platforms
  • Partner with Supply Chain, Logistics, and Finance to resolve transportation execution issues while maintaining stable operations across internal and externally operated facilities.

S/4HANA TM Design within a 3PL‑Integrated Landscape

  • Lead solution design and continuous optimization for SAP S/4HANA embedded TM within Private Cloud technical and extensibility constraints.
  • Define and own TM functional scope across:
    • Freight units, freight orders, packages, and capacity documents
    • Planning profiles and strategies
    • Freight charge calculation, settlement, and cost allocation
    • Transportation event tracking and status visibility
  • Design end‑to‑end transportation scenarios that explicitly account for handoffs between SAP TM and 3PL execution systems, including:
    • Transportation planning initiated in TM with warehouse execution at 3PLs
    • Carrier execution events sourced from external logistics providers
    • Intercompany and stock‑transfer flows spanning multiple operating models
  • Establish clear integration and ownership boundaries between:
    • SAP TM (planning, cost, visibility, governance)
    • 3PL WMS/TMS platforms (physical warehouse execution)
  • Drive adoption of SAP standard TM capabilities and sanctioned extensibility (configuration, Fiori, BAdIs) while minimizing custom logic that conflicts with RISE constraints.

Integration, Financial Control & Compliance

  • Ensure TM integrates sustainably with:
    • SD and MM delivery processes
    • FI for freight accruals, settlement, and cost distribution
    • EWM / WM where SAP‑managed warehousing exists
    • External 3PL platforms via approved integration patterns
  • Govern transportation cost accuracy and auditability regardless of whether execution occurs internally or at partner‑managed facilities.
  • Validate TM processes against business, financial, and regulatory requirements, recommending operational or process changes where SAP standard provides superior control.
  • Produce and maintain high‑quality documentation:
    • Functional requirements and design specifications
    • End‑to‑end transportation and integration flows
    • Configuration rationale and architectural decisions
  • Develop and execute test strategies, scenarios, and scripts supporting GxP / GAMP 5 / CSV validation for transportation processes impacting regulated supply chains.
  • Act as a TM subject‑matter expert during audits, cutovers, and critical production incidents.

Leadership & Delivery

  • Serve as functional lead for SAP TM initiatives, enhancements, and optimization workstreams within an S/4HANA Private Cloud program.
  • Facilitate global design workshops spanning:
    • Business stakeholders
    • Integration teams
    • 3PL and logistics service partners
  • Mentor junior analysts and contribute to:
    • Global SAP TM configuration standards
    • Integration governance and design templates
  • Participate in shared on‑call and critical incident response, coordinating across SAP and third‑party execution partners as required.

Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with an enterprise logistics mindset
  • Ability to balance Private Cloud constraints, partner operating models, and business requirements
  • Clear communicator capable of aligning SAP, business, and 3PL stakeholders
  • Proven ability to influence outcomes across organizational and vendor boundaries

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 10+ years of SAP logistics experience, including deep hands‑on expertise with SAP S/4HANA embedded Transportation Management.

  • Strong functional knowledge of:
    • Transportation planning and execution
    • Freight costing, accruals, and settlement
    • Integration with SD, MM, EWM/WM, FI, and third‑party logistics systems
  • Experience delivering solutions within SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud (RISE) constraints.
  • Experience contributing to or leading SAP transformation, optimization, or global template initiatives.
  • Experience working in Agile or SAFe delivery models.
  • Background in regulated manufacturing or distribution environments (medical device, life sciences, or similar).

Skills

  • Experience with:
    • Multi‑leg, multi‑modal, and cross‑border transportation scenarios
    • Carrier collaboration and freight tendering automation
    • High‑volume 3PL integration landscapes
