JOB SUMMARY

 

The FP&A Manager – R&D is accountable for financial planning, forecasting, and performance management for Terumo BCT’s global Research & Development organization. This role serves as the primary finance partner to R&D leadership and is responsible for ensuring financial discipline, transparency, and decision support across new product development, sustaining engineering, and innovation investment portfolios.

Reporting to the Director, Corporate FP&A, this role leads R&D FP&A activities, manages analyst resources, and plays a key role in enterprise planning cycles, investment governance, and longrange planning within a global, regulated medical device environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

R&D Financial Leadership & Accountability

 

  • Own FP&A accountability for the global R&D function, including:
    • Operating expense and headcount planning
    • Capital and project investment tracking
    • Portfolio‑level financial performance and ROI visibility
  • Serve as a finance advisor to R&D leadership, enabling informed decision‑making across innovation and development priorities
  • Partner with R&D leaders to balance investment, risk, speed‑to‑market, and cost discipline

 

Planning, Forecasting & Long‑Range Strategy

 

  • Lead R&D components of:
    • Monthly and quarterly forecasts
    • Annual operating plan (AOP)
    • Multi‑year long‑range planning (LRP)
  • Guide R&D leaders through planning assumptions, trade‑offs, and scenario analysis
  • Ensure alignment between R&D plans and enterprise financial objectives
  • Review, challenge, and approve R&D financial submissions before consolidation at the corporate level

 

Portfolio & Investment Analysis

 

  • Provide financial leadership across:
    • New product development programs
    • Sustaining engineering initiatives
    • Platform, technology, and process investments
  • Support portfolio governance, investment committee inputs, and post‑investment performance tracking
  • Develop and maintain models to assess financial impact, capacity utilization, and risk exposure across the R&D pipeline

 

Team Leadership & Development

 

  • Lead, coach, and develop Financial Analysts supporting R&D
  • Set expectations for analytical rigor, business partnership, and executive‑quality outputs
  • Review and elevate analyses prepared by the team, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and insight
  • Allocate workload and priorities in alignment with corporate FP&A direction

 

Reporting, Analytics & Process Excellence

 

  • Deliver clear, actionable R&D financial reporting to FP&A leadership and executive stakeholders
  • Drive continuous improvement in R&D FP&A processes, tools, and reporting standards
  • Partner with Corporate FP&A on standardization, transformation initiatives, and system enhancements
  • Ensure appropriate use of ERP, planning, and BI tools to increase insight and efficiency

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting required
  • MBA or other advanced degree preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or related roles
  • Minimum 2 years in a people leadership or process‑ownership role preferred
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with R&D or engineering organizations strongly preferred
  • Experience in medical device, life sciences, healthcare, or other regulated manufacturing environments preferred
  • Experience operating in a global, matrixed organization

Skills

  • Expert‑level financial planning, forecasting, and analytical skills
  • Strong understanding of R&D cost structures, capitalization concepts, and portfolio economics
  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and lead through complexity
  • Advanced financial modeling and Excel skills
  • Strong executive communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience with SAP or similar ERP platforms preferred
  • Experience with financial planning systems (e.g., Workday Adaptive, Anaplan, OneStream)
  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
  • Demonstrated leadership, judgment, and accountability mindset
  • Public AI tool compentency

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This role will be based on site in Lakewood, CO with hybrid flexibility

Target Pay Range:  $107,900.00 to $134,900.00  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  15.0%
