JOB TITLE: Lead Research Scientist



Design and perform scientific research spanning a portfolio of products or business lanes to include technical execution of experiments and protocol writing/development.  Develop scientific strategy, lead, and coordinate scientific contribution and effort for multiple business areas, and make decisions relevant to scientific strategy. Expand reach beyond internal products as one who can influence the direction of the industry. Recognized as an expert within the company with diverse and varied understanding and experience working with multiple unrelated scientific disciplines. Represent scientific perspective to stakeholders within the company including regulatory, clinical, engineering, manufacturing, commercial, marketing, leadership, and executives.



  • Serves as an organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs, acting as an advisor to management and customers on critical or advanced scientific research studies and applications
  • Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role; champions and sponsors own ideas and ideas of others within and across products, functions, and businesses, and significantly influences team direction by incorporating innovative original and team member ideas
  • Spearheads initiatives to acquire and implement new techniques and methods; regularly contributes ideas and/or concepts that support the generation or products and processes; initiates and leads formal and informal discussions related to team, business, and technology issues
  • Guides department and/or product strategy; contributes to establishing business objectives, goals, and budgets
  • Looks for engagement with strategic partners inside and outside of company for collaboration; interfaces with external customers, regulatory bodies and stakeholders related to scientific evidence
  • Analyzes and interprets data to produce quantitative analyses, reports and information related to research for internal and external audiences, with a global reach
  • Regularly consults and effectively presents on a broad range of complex technical and scientific information/analysis and responds to questions from management and executive leadership; submits original work for publication in scientific journals
  • Leads in producing and reviewing scientific evidence and documentation to support global regulatory submission and maintenance
  • Applies scientific expertise to complex, specialized tasks in multiple work areas, serving as the resident expert in assigned areas
  • Serves as a role model in teaming with others to share ideas, solutions, and information, keeping others informed, creatively solving problems, and increasing the technical awareness/ability of others



  • Serves as a mentor for scientific staff
  • Engages in laboratory experimentation and method validation when needed, and evaluates new technologies to increase laboratory capabilities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Leads and champions overall GLP program and provides expertise in matters related to GLP
  • Works on significant and unique issues where analysis requires evaluation of intangibles, using independent judgment in methods, techniques, and evaluation of criteria for obtaining results and solutions





Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered. PhD or MS degree in biological, physical, chemical or medical science preferred.



Minimum 10- 20 years experience in related field, depending on educational level



  • Extensive experience in immunology, cell biology, transfusion medicine, and/or hematology
  • Advanced understanding of the role experimentation plays in the overall corporate strategy for alignment with critical commitments. Ability to apply scientific expertise to other disciplines.
  • Ability to anticipate problems, generate technically advanced alternatives, and implement innovative solutions for complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity 
  • Self-directed and demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Ability to assess priorities to execute multiple tasks/projects
  • Enthusiasm to learn and share new methods and techniques within several areas of technical expertise
  • Strong initiative and willingness and ability to lead and inspire others
  • Understanding of cross-functional areas, business objectives, goals, budgets, and costs
  • Advanced understanding of medical statistics and experimental design
  • Ability to seek and acquire funding (internal/external) to support business goals
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with change; ability to comfortably shift gears and handle risk and uncertainty
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and manage conflict across the organization and to foster courageous conversations; not afraid to take negative action when necessary
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge and use of relevant PC software applications/statistical programs and skills to use them effectively


An equivalent competency level acquired through a variation of these qualifications may be considered.



Typical office environment requirements: reading, speaking, hearing, close vision, traverse, bending, sitting, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

Target Pay Range:  $115,000 to $155,000  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  20.0%
