JOB SUMMARY

Integral member of the Global Intellectual Property Department that protects the Company’s intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.  Working without significant direction, provides legal counsel to the overall Company regarding intellectual property matters for purposes of obtaining and maintaining the Company’s global intellectual property portfolio.  Collaborates with other Law Department and cross-functional team members in the handling of transactional matters involving intellectual property. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Participates in a team of intellectual property associates, including attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff.
  • Provides intellectual property services to the Company with a high degree of independence.
  • Supports the protection of innovation, including managing the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications.
  • Coordinates and oversees the work of external counsel, both U.S. and non-U.S., in the development and prosecution of intellectual property rights in alignment with Company goals.
  • Independently meets with researchers, innovators, and others in the Company to identify inventions and intellectual property issues.
  • Identifies highly complex legal issues and develops resolutions to those issues.
  • Assists in the implementation of significant intellectual property policies.
  • Participates in the development and evaluation of paralegals and other support staff.
  • Establishes systems for the efficient performance of legal services.
  • Reviews, drafts, and modifies contracts and other documents with intellectual property significance.
  • Counsels on patentability, validity, freedom-to-operate, and clearance issues.
  • Conducts landscape evaluations of potential new innovations for white space identification.
  • Provides trademark and copyright analyses and counsel.  Works with other team members in managing and building a global trademark portfolio.
  • Supports intellectual property litigation, including providing counsel and advice related thereto.
  • Provides training and educational opportunities related to intellectual property protection.
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

Candidates will have completed a Juris Doctorate degree and will have obtained a degree in Engineering or Science, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field of study.

 

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of intellectual property experience.
  • Candidates will preferably have experience in supervising outside counsel with respect to patent and trademark matters.
  • Candidates will preferably have contract and transactional experience.

 

Skills

  • Strong English language skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong patent and trademark drafting and prosecution skills.
  • Strong legal research and drafting skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the Company.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Requires registration to practice before a supreme court of at least one state in the U.S.
  • Requires eligibility for registration to practice before the supreme court of the state in which the attorney is to be primarily located (preferably, Colorado).
  • Requires eligibility for registration to practice before the U.S. District Court for the district in which the attorney is to be primarily located (preferably, Colorado).
  • Requires registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Typical Office Environment requirements include: reading, speaking, hearing, close vision, traverse, bending, sitting, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

Target Pay Range:  $120,000.00 to $150,000.00  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  10.0%
