Director, Global Tax

 

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for overall management of corporate tax matters as head of the Tax Department for the Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies business globally, including tax planning and research, tax risk analysis, tax reporting and compliance, tax audits and accounting for income taxes pursuant to International Financial Reporting Standards.  Provides leadership, vision, strategic direction, and day to day management of the Terumo BCT Tax Department and is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the tax function and its relationships within the Terumo BCT business and with the tax departments of Terumo Corporation in Japan and Terumo Americas in New Jersey.  Reports to Chief Financial Officer and has budgetary responsibility for Tax Department expenditures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ensure proper registration with tax authorities, timely preparation, and submission of required corporate income tax filings and payment of corporate income tax owed by Terumo BCT entities in each country or jurisdiction (e.g., national, state, provincial, regional, county, municipal or other) where the business is subject to income tax according to applicable tax laws
  • Coordinate the calculation of accrued income tax expense, income tax payable and deferred tax assets, and liabilities pursuant to International Financial Reporting Standards for each legal entity within the Terumo BCT group, maintain and document compliance with internal controls over income tax accounting, and prepare the global consolidation and analysis of income tax accounts of the Terumo BCT business for quarterly and annual reporting to Terumo Corporation
  • Develop and oversee transfer pricing policies and procedures for transactions between Terumo BCT legal entities (or a Terumo BCT entity and a Terumo affiliate), monitor the results of Terumo BCT entities from transactions with related parties to ensure they are consistent with transfer pricing principles, maintain transfer pricing documentation as required by tax authorities in relevant countries and coordinate with commercial division and financial planning department to ensure that pricing decisions are consistent with company policy
  • Develop and implement processes for accurate calculation, reporting and remittance of transaction taxes (such as sales and use tax, VAT or GST), property or asset taxes, and other types of corporate non-income taxes (including excise tax and taxes on capital or equity)
  • Maintain US tax depreciation database of fixed assets for relevant Terumo BCT entities and coordinate with general ledger accountant responsible for fixed assets to ensure consistency between tax and financial accounting
  • Recommend strategies to Terumo BCT and Terumo Corporation management to improve tax efficiency, reduce tax risk and minimize global tax costs for the business
  • Provide tax analysis, advice, and support to management on proposed mergers, acquisitions or dispositions and expansion into new markets and product lines
  • Respond to correspondence from tax authorities, manage and resolve tax audits and vigorously defend Terumo BCT tax filings and policies
  • Coordinate with the Terumo Corporation tax department, Terumo Americas tax department and other tax associates in the global Terumo organization on tax strategy, planning and compliance initiatives
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and judicial activity relating to changes in tax laws, policies or reporting requirements in the jurisdictions where Terumo BCT operates and assess the potential impact of such changes to the business
  • Provide advice and support to other parts of the business and external customers regarding tax risk management and compliance with tax laws

 

 

 

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership for the Tax Department’s development, direction, and effectiveness, adhering to organizational policies and processes and supporting overall business and corporate objectives
  • Supervise and mentor Tax Department associates and provide them with appropriate training, allocation and delegation of tasks, performance appraisals and opportunities for advancement
  • Engage with, oversee, and review the work product of external tax service providers
  • Support regional controllers and finance department associates in complying with local tax requirements
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget for the Terumo BCT Tax Department 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or Finance required, and Master’s in Tax preferred; equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be considered.

 

Experience

Minimum 10 years experience in the tax department of a public accounting firm and/or a multinational corporation with progressive responsibilities.  Detailed understanding of international tax principles and US tax laws applicable to international business required.  Must have current knowledge of US tax rules relating to Subpart F, foreign tax credit regulations, Global Intangible Low-Taxed Income (GILTI), Foreign-Derived Intangible Income (FDII) as well as the OECD’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project.

  • Detailed understanding of US GAAP and/or IFRS principles related to accounting for income taxes, and ability to interpret financial statements and accounting data

CPA required.

Target Pay Range:  $156,900.00 to $196,100.00  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  30.0%
