A critical leader helping to drive the evolution of Terumo BCT.  Through a comprehensive understanding of how early stage markets will develop, s/he will assess how BCT can best participate.  Responsible for identifying, evaluating and initiating business development opportunities to support the long range strategic plan. This includes building partnerships to distribute product, strengthen ties with existing distributors and channels and exploring alternative commercial relationships that can increase our market presence and penetration.  Specific activities include implementing the business development process across the enterprise, including mechanisms to gather relevant market intelligence and evaluate technologies.  Builds a network of relevant subject matter experts to scope incoming ideas, develop business cases for executive review, and lead commercialization planning team for approved ideas.  Builds an idea funnel in close collaboration with Ideation, Development and Strategic Marketing teams. 



Overall Process

  • Continually assesses  success of current activities, identifying strengths and weaknesses, then refining to optimize current and future deal structures and relationships.
  • Developing expertise, providing direction and improving  effectiveness while adhering to organizational policies and supporting business and corporate  objectives
  • Executes projects of considerable complexity involving solutions that affect all business success metrics:  market share, top-line growth, product competitiveness and business profitability.


Builds an opportunity / idea funnel

  • Serves as focal point to evaluate incoming industry requests,
  • Builds and leverages relationships with medical device and biotech companies to identify and execute on strategic partnership opportunities. 
  • Leverages competitive intelligence to identify future opportunities with emerging companies, technologies and solutions
  • Facilitates discussions with other divisions of Terumo on opportunities of mutual benefit. 


Conducts Initial Opportunity Scoping

  • Builds and pressure tests business cases in partnership with internal and potential external stakeholders, including financial models, technical assessment, strategic alignment and other qualitative metrics, to prioritize opportunities and determine the project's overall attractiveness.
  • Designs and oversees a structured tollgate process to ensure speed of response and appropriate engagement.

Due Diligence

  • Works closely with marketing, legal, finance and development teams to structure and successfully negotiate transactions.  
  • Owns thorough due diligence, determining required experts and level of engagement for specific team members.
  • Maintains confidentiality, controlling communications as appropriate for scope and nature of transaction. 

Commercialization Plans

  • Responsible for exploring alternative commercial models by evaluating distribution agreements, partnerships, affiliations and commercial channels.  Evaluates strategic aspects of commercialization.
  • Initiates commercialization launch teams and manages transition to appropriate business area leadership. May also have ongoing responsibility for a suitable acquired or partnered asset.
  • Structures appropriate commercialization milestones and measures of success, both qualitiative and quantitative.


Measuring Implementation

  • Conducts post-deal evaluations to maximize the synergies realized, implement remediation or expansion plans  as appropriate.





Bachelor’s degree, with 7-10 years hands-on experience structuring and evaluating partnerships, investments, licensing and various forms of commercial investments. Master’s degree preferred.



  • 12-15 years experience with varied functional background. 
  • Experience with medical device, cellular therapy or life sciences  industries a must. 
  • Clinical knowledge or  technical experience in relevant therapeutic growth areas a plus.



  • Expansive leadership skills including ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional management without formal reporting relationships.  A master of matrix management.
  • A systems thinker who readily grasps the business implications of decisions; displays orientation to profitability; demonstrates knowledge of market and competition.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand evolving scientific, market and regulatory trends as well as the current and future needs in the medical device and biotechnology industry
  • Ability to evaluate strategic, operational and financial implications of diverse growth  opportunities.
  • Ability to creatively connect TerumoBCT’s science and technology with evolving customer needs to surface untraditional partnerships and creative commercial models.  Serve as an effective industry ambassador for TerumoBCT, effectively representing our core competencies and values in diverse forums.  
  • Comfortable managing numerous projects simultaneously and independently defining priorities based on alignment with business objectives  and long term strategic plan.
  • Outstanding verbal, written and presentation skills, with demonstrated ability to synthesize complex scientific material and relevant business dynamics for thoughtful decision-making.    
  • Strong executive presence, comfortable mobilizing associates at all levels and negotiating with C-suite – internally and externally.
  • Strong diplomatic skills with demonstrated success holding others accountable.



 Typical Office Environment requirements include: reading, speaking, hearing, close vision, walking, bending, sitting, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

Additional Physical Requirements

Periodic domesitic and international travel.

Work outside standard work hours may be required.



Target Pay Range:  $180,000 to $225,000  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  30.0%
