JOB TITLE:  Director, Global R&D Platform Leader – CTT (Cell Therapy Technologies)

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Director, Global R&D Platform Leader is the single point of contact for all R&D product development activities for CTT (Cell and Gene Therapy) portfolio, encompassing products and solutions generating approximately US$65m global revenue for Terumo BCT. This role will use the latest engineering tools and reliability methods to manage and develop an organization that includes Systems, Disposables and Equipment Engineers and Technicians to ensure development of products to robust standards. This role leads 1) worldwide R&D product development of equipment and disposables to enable sales growth across both developed and emerging markets, 2) product lifecycle management (PLM) processes to deliver the global platform strategy and 3) development of global value-propositions in partnership with global Marketing cohorts.  Additionally, this leadership role is an intimate business partner that influences and executes the business strategy to ensure best-in-class development and commercialization aligned to market trends, our customers and patients. Beyond product and technical platform considerations, the Global R&D Platform Leader will be tightly aligned with Ideation, Business Technology Lead, Global Marketing, Services, Clinical/Scientific Affairs and Sustaining & Software Engineering to address the broader needs and aspirations of global customers.  This role fosters innovation and enables creative solutions that meet both internal and external customer needs, while ensuring world class quality and product safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Operates as the global “go to” leader for the platform and owns issue resolution, platform lifecycle management and strategic development focused on innovating the platform and business model to take share and expand the addressable market:
    1. Participates in the short- and long-term planning process that establishes technical objectives for a business unit project or functional engineering group
    2. Applies technical and managerial expertise to evaluate proposed solutions, adaptations, and modifications to products used globally
    3. Works across diverse regional and functional boundaries to promote collaboration and teamwork to achieve business objectives and project timelines
  • Responsible for the review, evaluation, and development of engineering teams within a cross-functional environment
  • Effectively communicates with senior management and external customers across a spectrum of areas related to product development including technical, strategic, and business details
  • Infuse innovation through all stages of the product lifecycle
  • Identifies new project and product opportunities and is able to articulate value and risk of opportunities
  • Ensures product design and documentation meets FDA and global regulatory requirements
  • Ensures compliance with TerumoBCT’s Quality System, regulations and safe working practices
  • Effectively engages with customers and other medical professionals

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

  • Bachelors’ degree in engineering is required
  • M.S. or PhD degree in Engineering combined with management degree preferred

 

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years progressive experience, 10 of which have been in a management capacity
  • Minimum of 5 years medical device industry or similarly regulated industry
  • Experience developing products in the cell and gene therapy area preferred
  • Partnership credentials with cross disciplinary teams such as product management, marketing management, manufacturing, services, sales, IT, legal, clinical, regulatory affairs and quality, project management, HR functions, and other functions within an organization.

 

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret and communicate complex engineering requirements in a manner that optimizes product flexibility without compromising quality standards
  • Leverage whole systems thinking approach to elevate software integration across device platforms (application, analysis, embedded, security, etc.)
  • Capacity to define and communicate engineering challenges and provide guidance to top management in developing and implementing positive and proactive solutions 
  • History of success with building products that meet customer needs and quality standards required in a regulated industry
  • Knowledge of current FDA regulatory and ISO requirements and trends affecting medical devices
  • Advanced understanding and application of Design Controls, Quality Management System to product development

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Typical Office Environment requirements include: reading, speaking, hearing, close vision, walking, bending, sitting, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

Target Pay Range:  $180,000-$226,000  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  30.0%
