JOB TITLE: Corporate Counsel - Employment Law

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Corporate Counsel - Employment Law position is a pivotal role that will significantly impact our operations, particularly in the realms of legal and HR collaboration. This role is instrumental in continually enhancing the employee experience while balancing the needs of our expanding medical device business. It comes with substantial influence and partnership with a dedicated team committed to supporting these initiatives.

 

This position exhibits robust legal experience to provide comprehensive support across all employment-related matters. With a strong background in advising organizations, they bring value to compliance, policy development, and dispute resolution within a dynamic and regulated industry.

 

The Corporate Counsel - Employment Law role leads, advises, and implements strategies to reduce risk and streamline support throughout the associate lifecycle. The expertise held in this role is critical for fostering a compliant and positive work environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Employment Law Advice and Counseling
    • Partner with HR and key business partners to provide day-to-day proactive employment law advice.
    • Address a variety of employment law matters including recruiting, hiring, employee relations, performance counsel, discipline and terminations.
    • Handle employment claims, wage and hour issues, workers’ compensation, and leave issues under federal and state laws.
  • Drafting and Negotiation
    • Collaborate with HR to draft, negotiate, and review severance packages.
    • Create settlement agreements, employment agreements, consulting agreements, and other employment-related agreements.
  • Legislative Developments
    • Proactively advise HR and business partners on applicable legislative developments.
    • Stay informed on legal trends that could impact the business.
  • Legal Training Development
    • Identify the need for legal training on company policies.
    • Assist in developing training materials on various employment law topics and legal processes.
  • Internal Investigations
    • Work closely with HR and compliance officers to conduct internal investigations.
    • Ensure transparency and consistency in investigative processes.
  • Risk Mitigation
    • Exercise considerable judgment in identifying potential employee relations risks.
    • Proactively mitigate these risks through strategic counsel.
  • Coordination of Legal Support Staff
    • Assist in the coordination and oversight of paralegals and other legal support staff.
  • Managing Legal Disputes
    • Help manage employment-related legal disputes.
    • Supervise the work of outside counsel as needed.
  •  Additional Duties
    • Perform other job-related duties as required, including tasks in legal areas outside of employment law.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

Knowledge required to perform at this level is acquired through completion of a Juris Doctor degree and practical experience.

 

Experience

Minimum 4 years’ experience in relevant legal work with a portion of this time spent in a legal firm.

 

Skills

  • In-Depth Knowledge of Employment Law: A comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Litigation Experience: Proven track record in handling employment-related litigation, including discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, and wage disputes.
  • Contract Negotiation and Drafting: Expertise in drafting and negotiating employment contracts, severance agreements, non-compete agreements, and other related documents.
  • Advisory Skills: Ability to provide strategic legal advice to HR departments and senior management on employment law matters.
  • Policy Development: Experience in partnering with HR in creating and implementing company policies that comply with legal standards while aligning with organizational goals.
  • Investigative Skills: Proficiency in conducting internal investigations related to employee grievances or compliance issues.
  • Ethical Judgment: High ethical standards with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity in all dealings.
  • Ability to Quickly Build Trust: Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with HR professionals and key business partners.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication abilities to effectively articulate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Self-Starter: Demonstrates the ability to work independently, drive matters to conclusion with minimal supervision, while coordinating and collaborating effectively with other attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to organize, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Excellent analytical skills to identify potential legal issues proactively and develop practical solutions.
  • Continuous Learning: Dedication to staying current with changes in employment law through continuous education and professional development.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Candidate must be admitted in good standing in one state in the US and eligible for single client admission in Colorado. Current licensure in the state of Colorado is a plus.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Typical Office Environment requirements include: reading, speaking, hearing, close vision, walking, bending, sitting, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

 

Hybrid work schedule from the Lakewood, CO office.

 

There will be an occasional requirement to work outside of normal business hours, consistent with other similar level positions.

Additional Physical Requirements

Ability to travel occasionally, including internationally (<10%).

 

Target Pay Range:  $147,900.00 to $184,900.00  -  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data
Target Bonus on Base:  15.0%
