Sr Systems Engineer R&D

Job Title: Senior R&D Systems Engineer

Location: Cartago, Costa Rica
Department: Research & Development
Reports To: Sr. R&D Systems Engineering Manager

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior R&D Systems Engineer to lead the design, integration, and validation of complex systems within our blood and cell technology portfolio. This role will be focused in sustaining projects for critical changes required for the Terumo Blood and Cell treatment capital equipment systems, ensuring that multidisciplinary systems meet performance, reliability, and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead systems engineering efforts across the portfolio of sustaining projects ranging from compliance, service and cost—from concept development through design, integration, testing, and implementation.
• Define and manage system requirements, architecture, and interfaces for existing products.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, quality) to ensure cohesive system integration.
• Conduct trade studies, risk assessments, and root cause analyses to support design decisions.
• Develop and execute system verification and validation plans, including test protocols and reports.
• Drive innovation by identifying emerging technologies and integrating them into product roadmaps.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of best practices in systems engineering.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and internal quality systems.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in systems engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, preferably in an R&D or product development environment.
• Strong understanding of systems engineering principles (INCOSE, MBSE, V-model, etc.).
• Proficiency in tools such as Solidworks, Matlab, Minitab, and others.
• Experience with system modeling, simulation, and requirements management.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred:

• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Experience in R&D and the Medical Device Industry.
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, Design for Six Sigma, and Design for Manufacturability.
