JOB SUMMARY

Advanced level engineering position providing Controls Engineering support for development and qualification of automated manufacturing systems for a medical device company.  Responsibilities include gathering requirements from internal customer organizations, interfacing directly with machine integrators to ensure requirements are understood and design and documentation of the controls system meets customer requirements.  Common activities include PLC programming, HMI/SCADA programming, review of schematics/diagrams, development of controls narratives and engineering flow diagrams, acceptance testing, installation, debug and providing post validation production support.  Position is expected to provide direction to internal/external resources while mentoring junior engineers and technicians.  Engineering resources will be based in Denver Colorado, requiring travel to machine integrators and manufacturing location.   

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Design, installation and qualification of automated manufacturing systems for medical device production in a clean room environment.
  • Reviews existing controls systems and corrects software/hardware to align with design standards.
  • Provides technical leadership to multiple project teams, ensuring controls systems of all projects are current with customer standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of latest technology and design practices to keep organization current with industry development.
  • Develops and reviews control system documentation ensuring documentation is effective in the hands of the end user.
  • Receives assigned total project leadership responsibilities on a portion of major significant projects and will be given total management responsibility for smaller projects.
  • Manages and provides leadership for the functional group’s development, direction, and effectiveness, adhering to organizational policies and processes and supporting overall business and corporate objectives.
  • Implements and understands FDA or regulatory requirements as necessary.
  • Updating and troubleshooting of equipment including pneumatic cylinders, vision systems, robotics, motors (servos and steppers), and data acquisition systems.
  • Highlights risks and understands how to approach and complete tasks, avoiding serious delays and considerable expenditure of time and resources.                  
  • Advises team members pro-actively on technical ideas and promotes skill development of team work.
  • Handles frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts.  Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.
  • Works cooperatively and effectively within a team environment to achieve common goals and results, often influencing the outcome of the team(s).

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work direction responsibility may include technicians and junior engineers.
  • May work with manufacturing and other functional groups on manufacturing and regulatory compliance issues.
  • Travel is expected 15% - 20% of project duration.

 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, preferred.

 

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years experience.
  • Two years of GMP manufacturing experience required.
  • Reviewing and creating control systems specifications.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi and Siemens machine control systems.
  • Support and development of machine control systems; Studio5000 LogixDesigner, FactoryTalk View Studio is preferred.
  • Industrial Networking, Vision Systems and Wonderware Historian is preferred.
     

Skills

  • Requires demonstrated skills in technical innovation, technical leadership, mechanical, electrical and or chemical engineering.
  • Knowledge of automated control systems including: PLCs, HMI, pneumatic and electrical systems.
  • Ability to define process requirements from customer input.
  • Knowledge of control protocols including TCPIP and EtherNet/IP.
  • Strong interactive skills in general communication, cross-functional participation and influence, technical leadership, project management, coordination with cross-functional team member, and support for subordinates, junior engineers, technicians, and management.
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude to assist with equipment trouble-shooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

General Labor Environment requirements include: use of personal protective equipment, reading, speaking, hearing, walking, bending, standing, stretching/reaching, hand/finger dexterity, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, or transporting up to 500 pounds via carts or mechanized equipment.
